Yarn Along

I've got a couple of projects to share with you this week. First up is one that I've posted about before, the Coast to Coast fingerless mittens.

As you can see I've finished most of the first mitten apart from the thumb and I'm just starting the second one. I think I'm going to frog back the ribbing on the fingers of the first one though and redo it with smaller needles. And I'll cast on the second one with smaller needles too. My own fault for not reading my notes properly. Shouldn't take long to fix though, and I'm thrilled with how they're turning out.

My other project is my latest bit of indulgent knitting. I've been working my way through the back episodes of the Little Bobbin's podcast and after seeing so many photos and videos of Dani's beautiful sock yarn blanket I couldn't help but be inspired to cast on my own version.

Now for years I've been adamant that there is no way I'll ever knit a blanket, let alone one made out of sock yarn. Well I'm eating my words now. I've done 26 squares already and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. Each square feels like a mini-project on it's own and as you decrease it feels like every row you're getting faster and faster until suddenly you've cast off and then you get to choose the yarn for your next square. It's brilliant and very addictive. Love it :-)

So my plan for this afternoon is to get the ribbing done on both mittens in the right size needles and then I'm going to knit on my blanket some more. Have any of you had a project you've been certain you'd never make and then you've tried it and found it was lots of fun?

  1. Oh, the rabbit hole that is the sock yarn blanket! I tried it, but figured out at my rate I'd be knitting it for 5 years and I can't handle that long of a WIP. I wish you lots of staying power with yours. What you have done already looks lovely. Oh, and those mitts are fabulous!

  2. Love your cables and the blanket! It is such a huge project, but it looks like a great one to pick up for some mindless knitting. I also love that you don't have to think too much about choosing colors - total creative freedom :)

    1. Thank you :) Yeah it's perfect for mindless knitting or when I've got a short attention span, which is quite a lot of the time lol

  3. Those mitts are just so pretty. The yarn really shows off the cables.

I do want to do the sock-yarn blanket someday. Lord knows I have enough sock-yarn leftovers!

    1. Thank you, I hoped it would. Darker colours seem to show cables off better for me.

Do it! So much fun lol

    1. I think by their nature blankets are long term projects, it will still be there when you're in the mood for it again :) Lol I might take you up on that!

    1. Thank you :) The yarn is a bit greener in real life, my camera struggles to get the colours accurate indoors. Or more accurately I struggle to get it to take accurate photos!

  8. What a great way to use up those sock yarn scraps. I only a few as I haven't knitted many socks. The color and the cables go well with one another for that mitt. I agree w/your decision to use smaller needles for the ribbing.

    1. I'm starting to run out of different balls of yarn but I don't think it will matter if I repeat some. I'd better get on with knitting more socks! Yeah I've done it now and they look much neater. It does say to use smaller ones in the pattern but clearly my brain wasn't paying attention at the time

  9. And sorry, I can't think of any project for your ending question. My heart and the blood in my head are still calming down from my 3.23 mile run (about 5.20K).

    1. oo well done you. We've got up to a minute continuous running now rather than 30 seconds, still a long way until we get to your level. I kept messing up my breathing and was feeling quite dizzy at times. I kept on though and I wasn't the last one to finish which is always good lol

  11. Evelyn, I can see through your beautiful blog that we share a love of color! I love your mitts. I made a pair of mitts from a different pattern, and I wish the pattern had instructed to knit the ribbing with a smaller needle. I think you are wise! My "I'll-never-knit-that project"? A sweater knit from fingering yarn. I'm afraid it will take f.o.r.e.v.e.r. to finish. Of course, I have one such pattern sitting on my Ravelry queue. :)

  14. Too funny; I said the same thing about the sock blanket. But Little Bobbins converted me as well. I love her podcast! I haven't started but I have decided it definitely will be happening!
